Red Squirrel
Red Squirrel
This red squirrel, also know as a Eurasian squirrel, is sporting its brilliant summer red coat and flaming ears and is set in a natural surrounding of silver birch and foliage.
The diorama is set in an old wooden storage container with original black paint indicating its dimensions, 2”-8”, as well as a small amount a grey paint splotches in one section that add utilitarian charm to the humble vessel. The interior scene is set by needle felted birch trees with added Angora goat fiber to give them their characteristic smooth silvery bark. The foliage is dyed sheep locks. Acrylic paint makes the background of this natural summer scene. The red squirrel is built over a wire armature and has a solid wool core. The top coat is a custom blend of silk, alpaca, merino, blue-faced Leicester, and Corriedale. These fibers were applied in an array of tiny tufts then sculpted with felting needles and scissors to give it the natural look of real fur. The eyes are wool. The whiskers are horsehair. Signed on back.
This piece can rest vertically on a flat surface or, weighing only 11 ounces, can be easily hung with Velcro adhesive strips (not included).
