This needle felted loon was inspired by a recent hike deep in the Vermont’s Green Mountain National Forest. While taking a moment to savor a beautiful view over Little Rock Pond, the loud and haunting call of a loon punctuated the stillness and quiet of the mid-summer morning. It was one of those magical moments in nature you want to remember forever.

This loon is built over a wire armature and has a solid wool core. Hints of green and purple wool add vibrance to the sleek black form. The white breast has a hint of iridescent fiber, like water drops—a nod to its watery habitat. The smallest white feather markings are a series of straight and French knot stitches. The eyes and beak are wool. The grey-brown baby is permanently wired to the adults back and is made from soft alpaca. It’s eyes are wool and beak is wire and beeswax. The top coat “feathers” are predominately merino, alpaca, and silk. This piece measure 9 inches long from the beak to tail tip and 4.25 inches tall at the head.
