Silk Cigar Ribbon Quilt Square
Silk Cigar Ribbon Quilt Square
Heather purchased this rare silk cigar ribbon quilt square at an estate sale in Wayland, Massachusetts. It was likely made in Massachusetts around 1885. From about 1885 to 1915, the vibrant silk ribbons printed or embroidered with the cigar manufactures name and /or logo, were used to tie bundles of cigars together. The ribbons were collected and used to make table covers, pillows, bedding, and other useful household textiles.
Based on the log cabin quilt pattern, the maker of this square possessed exceptional design and sewing skills. The ribbons represent cigar manufacturers with names such as Harvard, Copley, Granite State, Moose Club, and Seal of Mass. The silk design is hand sewn directly to a cotton backing with no batting. It was folded for many years and so does not lie completely flat at the folds, particularly in the center. It cannot be cleaned and is in used condition consistent with its age.
